A storyteller performs a story directly to an audience. In other cultures, such as Arabic or Persian, this may be the only traditional form of public performance. The telling is generally accomplished by taking on the different characters, as they appear in the tale, but continuously returning to the story as the teller of the tale. Costumes and props, even music, may be used, but more frequently, the storyteller, through the craft of his art, supplies all necessary accompaniments himself.
